SAMMY MILLER TO RIDE AT CPOP 2015

Posted in News   |   February 25th 2015

We are thrilled that Sammy Miller will be riding at this year’s CPOP.  He will be bringing the 1954 BMW RS54 Rennsport one of the Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum’s latest acquisitions together with the 1000cc 1925 Brough Superior SS100.

This 500cc Grand Prix bike is similar to that raced by the great Walter Zeller who got 2nd in 1956 behind John Surtees on an MV-4 in the world championships!

This OHC engine was built in limited numbers for racing.  Without superchargers, which were banned in 1949, the bikes were not particularly successful in the 500cc solo class although Walter Zeller got second in 1956 behind John Surtees on an MV-4 in the world championships; it is believed Surtees still has one in his private collection. BMW won almost all of the first ten places in the sidecar class from 1959 to 1972.

Besides the factory machine, a batch of 25 Rennsports was manufactured in 1954, 5 for the factory team and 20 for sale to private customers.  These engines together with the factory units were not only to be used in solo racing BMWs but also achieved unparalleled success in the sidecar class.

Sammy Miller MBE has been competing, and winning, for the last 53 years.  He has been successive British Champion 11 times and European Champion twice. Sammy has restored many rare and exotic machines and opened the Musuem in 1980.  To read more about Sammy and the museum go to Sammy Miller Website
